12 October 2003 Sunday Ayaviri

Very few automobiles made way for the ubiquitous
bicycle taxis and street vendors, selling everything
from fruits and vegetables to critical bicycle parts.
We are headed for Puno and Lake Titicaca today, with an overnight stop in the small village of Ayaviri.

On the way, we stopped at the highest point between Cuzco and Puno ... 14,700 feet. Those with their GPS toys, Al and Bill, have been regaling us with the satellite tracking of our trip thus far, much to the delight of everyone on the bus. Driving through these Andean villages outside the city, I am curious about the significance of painting their doors bright blue. The buildings are primarily made of classic clay adobe or bricks. The landscape is your basic brown at this time of year, matching the brownish buildings. And then you see these startling indigo blue doors on almost every house. Another one for the mystery bucket.
